The organizational team

Claudia — I’m Claudia, the spokesperson for ver.di Regenbogen Hamburg. I was part of the founding meeting of the Hamburg Lesbian Network, which organized the Hamburg Dyke* March for many years. Following the examples of Berlin and Cologne, I proposed bringing the Dyke* March to Hamburg and have been involved from the very beginning. I am responsible for the social media channels and public relations.

I’m Jo and I lived in Australia for eight years, where I studied criminology. Back in Germany, I’m active with Queer Amnesty International and, since 2023, I’ve been co-hosting the Dyke* March with Nathalie.

Petra — I’m Petra, and I’ve been supporting the Dyke* March organizing team in various roles for several years.

Karin — I’m Karin, and I coordinate across different areas. I’m happy when we manage to create a strong and cohesive thread both leading up to and during the Dyke* March. I’m always involved in finance and admin-related tasks—sometimes handling assembly registrations, sometimes helping out here and there—and I also focus on building connections within the team and externally. “Stay United” and “Support Your Local Dyke* March” are guiding ideas that support and motivate me throughout the organizing process.

Maike — I’m Maike, and as a member of the organizing team, I created the website and maintain it. I draw on my experience as an online marketing manager for this.

Tina — I’m Tina, and I’ve always had a camera in my hand since childhood. With more experience, a photography business alongside school, and numerous shoots, I’m now especially driven—alongside my psychology studies—by passion projects like the Dyke* March.

Isa — I’m Isa and I study computer science. At the Dyke* March, I support the organizing team in various areas. I also assist Maike with the technical side of the website.

Eva — I’m Eva. For me, fighting also means celebrating in the streets with 1,000 other lesbians*.

2016

The first organizational meeting

The idea for a Hamburg Dyke* March was formed within a meeting of the reading network. Shortly thereafter, the first organizational meeting of the Dyke* March Hamburg took place

The first march

The first Dyke* March in Hamburg took place on the Friday before the big CSD parade. Since then, this has traditionally been held annually on the first weekend in August.

5 years Dyke* March

For the five-year anniversary the Dyke* March Hamburg received a new logo. This has since adorned our calls.

The Corona March

Due to Corona, the Dyke* March had to be rethought. Instead of a running demo, there was the Dyke*-Line, which once led around the Inner Alster.

Winning the Pride Award

The Community Pride Award 2022 went to the lesbian network Hamburg for the organization of the Dyke* Marches Hamburg.

Where does the Dyke* March come from?

In many cities and countries, lesbian protest marches have a long-standing tradition. As early as 1981, the first demonstration for lesbian visibility took place in Toronto. Almost 30 years ago, a protest with around 20,000 participants was formed in Washington, for the first time under the name “Dyke March”, in order to be loud for the rights of lesbians and queer people. Marches followed in New York and San Francisco in the same year. Since then, the movement has spread internationally. The first European Dyke March started in London in 2012. In 2013, L-Mag, the magazine for lesbians, brought the Dyke*March to Berlin on the occasion of its 10th anniversary. Cologne followed in 2015, Hamburg in 2016 and we continue to grow! Together, all Dyke* Marches form a network – the Dyke* March Germany. The Dyke* March traditionally takes place on the eve of the big CSD demonstrations. The word “Dyke” (lesbian) often used as a swear word is reclaimed confidently by the lesbian community.

Meet the organization team

We have been organizing the Dyke* March Hamburg for ten years. We have already experienced a lot, had great speeches and danced wonderfully to the music. We always have our political message in mind – but also a lot of fun. We were also quickly on our feet when it came to challenges and found solutions.
